Message from Vanoosh ... update on Brad ...

For those that know Brad, please pray for him URGENTLY ... in the last week or so, Brad has been suffering from severe back pain and pain in his "good" right leg ... he has since discovered that he has a problem with a bulging disc in his spine which may require surgery. This is as a result of him favouring his right leg while his broken left leg continues to heal slowly, which has now impinged on his spine!

Please pray for the following:

** A full healing in his left leg including full healing of any blood clotting
** A full healing of his back pain and right leg pain and good sleep and rest
** Good responses to all the treatment he is receiving
** Patience and peace regarding why this is happening and the frustrations he is experiencing
** A good outcome with the Specialist appointment on Monday

Praise God for:

** His Brother Rod and His Mum & Dad for all their efforts in helping him
** That he remains in fairly high spirits despite all these set backs

Prayer for Brad

Our Brother in Christ and good friend, Brad, had a terrible accident today ... he fell off a 25m cliff this morning (Thurs, 2 Nov) and had to be air lifted to Royal North Shore Hospital by helicopter.

Praise and Thank God that he is alive!! He has sustained some major injuries - he has broken his leg in 5 places, however, thankfully, nothing else is apparently damaged apart from bruising but he will be in much pain for a while and will be in RNSH for some time with a lengthy period of recovery ahead. Please pray for his full and speedy recovery as he has his own business and is unlikely to be fully functional for a number of months to come. He is in surgery tonight.

Sulawesi violence continues

A couple weeks ago I referred to this tragic news. Read the report and the aftermath of these executions:

MEDIA ADVISORY, Sept. 21 /Standard Newswire/ -- The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) www.persecution.org has just become informed that the three Christian men facing the death penalty in Indonesia have been executed by firing squad. The men were executed just after midnight on Friday, September 22, 2006, Indonesia time.

“Justice has once again been denied Indonesia’s Christians,” said Jeremy Sewall, ICC Policy Analyst. “I am deeply saddened at this news, and ask all concerned Christians to pray for the families of these men. This is a tragedy. This is not justice.”

After their execution was stayed last month by the Attorney General for Central Sulawesi, Mohammad Yahya Sibe, he was suddenly replaced. He was the one who had to give the order for the executions to proceed. The Chief of Police was also suddenly replaced and sent to another department. The appeal for these men that should have lasted months or even a year to process was denied within weeks.

Tibo, Riwu, and Da Silva, all Christian, were the only men charged in the Poso conflict, even though the conflict started in 1998 and went till 2003. This is a glaring injustice and hints of a massive cover-up by the Indonesian government. ICC has personally investigated the Poso conflict. Entire Christian villages were attacked with government munitions and burned down using Indonesian government fuel trucks. Christian adults and children were beheaded. The Muslim community initiated the attacks and there was every indication that local Muslim government leaders were involved. Why were no Muslims ever charged in any of the attacks?

Aftermath: (Snippetts from news release and from a letter from Ian Freestone - Ruach Church)
The three men, Tibo, Riwu, and Da Silva, were convicted of ‘masterminding’ the conflict in Central Sulawesi which left 2000 people dead. The executions were strongly condemned by a range of human rights groups including Amnesty International who saw gross inconsistencies in the case. Even editorials in the Jakarta Post have condemned what they see as the injustice of it. This comment from one commentator is typical: “These men were sacrificed as scape-goats so that the government could wash their hands and walk away from the Poso conflict of 1998 to 2003. But if Indonesia really wants to show the world they value truth, they should re-open the investigation into this conflict and find all those responsible for the violence”

Meanwhile the situation in Central Sulawesi is quite tense following the executions. But guess why?? Are angry Christians going rampaging through the streets, or terrorizing their muslim neighbours??? NO – that would be in some way, understandable. No – in fact it’s the opposite. Over this last weekend, churches in Central Sulawesi have been bombed and Christians pulled off buses and attacked!

From the early days teaching 20 children to write their name in the dust and to sing songs of praise to Jesus, Childcare Kitgum Servants now operates an 18 acre sanctuary to which 4,000 orphans come each day for free schooling, meals and medicine, and to learn vocational skills to rebuild their future. In 2005 a 60 bed AIDS Hospice was opened in order to free children from the impossible burden of caring for dying relatives. As she sees her community, Irene dares to dream that God will enable her to rescue thousands more. Irene joins us, straight off the plane from Kitgum, bursting to share her love for Jesus and her mission to save women and children in His name.

Sheralyn Bucknell: After successfully leading and teaching the women of Pittwater Uniting Church at their annual retreat earlier this year, Sheralyn returns to share her wisdom and her unique walk with God. Sheralyn is well known and highly regarded on the Northern Beaches as a leader, teacher and role model. She has three children and along with her husband has planted a church in Los Angeles, California. Sheralyn will explore with us how we can more effectively mobilise our lives within the Body of Christ. Her casual and witty style is sure to inspire, entertain and challenge us.

Special Guests: From the ruins of post-war Darmstadt in Germany, a small group of faithful believers built a tiny brick chapel with their very own hands as a statement of faith and reconciliation for a guilt-ridden land. In 1961, a guesthouse was opened in Jerusalem, for holocaust survivors. In 1979, the group set out from Germany to establish a sanctuary of worship and prayer in Australia, choosing Theresa Park, NSW as the place where people can experience God's comfort and come to know Him more deeply. We are truly delighted to welcome these amazing ladies of faith and to hear what God has done in their lives and ministry as they demonstrate a daily choice to live by faith, and not by sight.

Free to Worship: Sonja Howard leads the Dance Ministry at Pittwater Uniting Church. She has a passion for reclaiming dance for Christ so that His girls can be truly free in His presence and worship Him with abandon! In the Free Worship elective we will learn about Sonja's vision and, together with her team, experience an "eyes closed, open to God" style of worship.

Devoted to Prayer: Our special guest speakers join us for a more intimate and practical session on prayer and meditation. If you've ever longed for a more fruitful prayer life and a deeper communion with Christ in the everyday, this practical and informative elective is perfect for you.

Women Mentoring Women: Have you ever wanted wise Christian counsel or the experience of more mature Christian "mums"? Have you ever thought about sharing the experience of your years with one younger than yourself, or wanted to prevent others from learning life's lessons the hard way? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions then you'll love this elective! This year we launch our inaugural Cross Denominational Women's Mentoring Programme. Come and learn more about mentoring and being mentored and register your interest in one of the first programmes of its kind in Sydney.

Faithbuilders: So often, the lives of ordinary women can inspire and encourage us to step out into new areas of serving God and His people. The Faithbuilders elective is brought to us by women who have stepped out into short term mission work, both here and overseas and have amazing stories to tell. We will not leave unchanged as we hear the testimonies of faith, perseverance and trust from our sisters in Christ.

African Enterprise is a Christian ministry partnership based in ten African countries, serving the church in Africa. Its primary focus is evangelism and ministries of reconciliation. It also has a range of aid and development projects. Outside of Africa AE has a number of support ministries. In Australia, African Enterprise raises support for its partners in Africa and seeks to raise awareness of the spiritual and physical needs in that vast continent.

We are looking for a Director of Youth Ministry Development who will work towards developing existing relationships and building new relationships with youth groups, individuals and organisations. The main objective of the role is to ensure there is a new generation of under 35's eager to be involved in supporting the ministry of AE with their prayers, finances and time. Applicants will need to demonstrate the capacity to maintain existing programs and the initiative to develop new programs that facilitate the building of partnerships that will advance the gospel in Africa.

The role will include raising support for AE’s Africa-based youth ministry teams; arranging and leading our Short Term Missions Program (3-5 week group tours to the mission field); managing our Internship Program (3-12 month working programs for individuals in Africa); and the recruitment and support of volunteer representatives in Australian churches.

This role would suit a person who has a heart for assisting in the growth of the church in Africa and is prepared to travel both within Africa and Australia. Leadership, oral/written communication and organisational skills are essential as well as good computer literacy.

If you thought 50 cents could save a person’s life, would you spend it? If you believed that five minutes of your time could help provide a village with clean water, would you give it? Most of us would answer, “Yes!” to both questions, so now we have an opportunity to do just that with an “Offering of Letters”.

In our church and in churches around Australia, we help fight global hunger, poverty and disease by giving to our church mission program – our support of AAP for example. But as effective as our giving is; and these programs are, the challenges in the world are tremendous, so we need to get the governments of rich and poor countries to do their part also.

The challenges right now are daunting. Around the world one billion people do not have safe water to drink and every year, 11 million children die before their fifth birthday, mainly from preventable diseases. But it does not have to be this way. Poverty is not natural! There is another way!

Now is the time to move forward in our fight against poverty, to address the structures and systems that maintain & sustain poverty. Micah Challenge is a global Christian campaign that urges decision makers, the governments and the powerful, in rich and poor countries to take more responsibility, and asks them to fulfil their promises to the Millenium Development Goals. This year we are asking our government to increase aid to 0.5% by 2010 to meet our fair contribution in halving global poverty by 2015, and to focus aid on poverty reduction. Right now our government spends 0.30% of our federal budget on aid & only 15% of that 0.30% is actually spent on poverty reduction. We can and must do better. Our MPs and Senators respond to their constituents. That’s where the five minutes and 50cents come in – we need to write them letter today! As a church, together – we can take 5 minutes for 0.5%, to raise our voice, and contact our local MPs! Let’s take the Micah Challenge.

Childcare for Reachout has now become an urgent need for us to fill, despite ongoing attempts to recruit help. This is for the pre-school age children and will enable their parents to participate in this conference to be held in Katoomba, Aug 18-20. There will be three sessions where childcare needs to be provided:

Saturday morning (9.00 am - 12.30 pm)
Saturday afternoon (2.00 pm - 4.30 pm)
Sunday morning (9. 00 am - 12.30pm).

Helpers may volunteer for all or just some sessions.

The St Matts Men’s Weekend is on again - from Thursday 10 August to Saturday 12 August (although you can stay through to the Sunday if you want to).

The destination is Seal Rocks - West Wind, which is virtually on the Beach.

Activities will include night and day beach Touch Footy and Soccer, Golf, Fishing, Surfing, Fellowship (focussed on Greed - How much is enough), the consumption of the traditional and famous 'Carl Gunther' 24 hour Pig, mash, peas and other goodies, sleeping rough, reading, generally chilling out and walking ... if you have the strength. Knee Rugby is banned ...

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of coming on one of these weekends in the past, speak to someone who has come - it is a great time for getting to know other men in a relaxed Christian environment. If you have a friend who may be interested in finding Christ, feel free to invite him ... I guarantee he will not feel uncomfortable and may well be encouraged to explore Christ further.

Omar Djoeandy is "CIA" = Chinese ethnically, born in Indonesia and an Australia since he was 10yrs old. He also studied and worked in Kenya for over 12 years. He has worked with SIM in Africa since 1983. In 1986 he went to Kenya to study at Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST). In 1998, Omar was invited to join the staff as the only non-Kenyan pastor at Nairobi Chapel and then in 2002 to be the Australian Director of SIM.

In the afternoon on Saturday, you will elect to study a 2+ hr workshop from a selection of key mission areas. Each workshop will be facilitated by experienced teams and be hands-on. Gain some essential mission skills for Australia and overseas. These workshops are an opportunity for you to work with experts on getting the skills for language learning, or advocacy, witnessing to Muslims or Chinese religionists, leading short-term missions, getting your local church motivated ... and more!

May 27/28 The Salvation Army is having the Red Shield Appeal.
This is a great opportunity for us to show our support of the Salvo's ministry which combines compassionate ministry and the sharing of the gospel of Jesus.
My advice is to round up 3-4 of your friends into a team to do a few streets together.
Last year, half of the 120 volunteers were from various local churches and it would be great to have at least that many again this year (maybe a few more). It’s a great opportunity for all ages to have a positive door knocking experience as you meet the neighbourhood in Jesus name and collect funds for a worthy cause.

I have read and seen a lot and often been disappointed by Christians who major on criticism and sourgrapes. Sure the book and movie present some severe distortions of the Bible and history but let's not miss a wonderful opportunity that it continues to raise for us to positively talk about our faith rather than being negative and defensive.

I am impressed by this guy who has spent time with Bush & Blair seeking to encourage world leaders to go deeper to a 'moral centre' which is neither left or right of politics. He's the author of "God's Politics: why the right gets it wrong and the left doesn't get it." and he speaks with clarity and authority on issues such as world poverty, Sept 11 and the Iraq situation. A Taste of Germany Downunder ...

A Showcase of Products and Services on offer from the German speaking community (German, Swiss and Austrian) will be held between 9am and 4pm on Sunday 21 May 2006. The event will promote small businesses such as bakers, butchers, restaurants, travel agents, cultural institutions and other small producers and service providers located in the Manly/Warringah/Pittwater area. The Small Business Showcase will be held in the hall of the Queenscliff Surf Pavillion, North Steyne. Admission is free.

The Showcase aims at increasing the awareness of these products and services both amongst Australians and Germans in the area, and will create a better understanding, appreciation and a bridge between these communities.

All proceeds from the Showcase will go to the ‘Action Against Poverty’ Program (www.actionagainstpoverty.org.au), which helps families out of poverty in Manado, Indonesia. This community initiative started in 2005, and is supported by the Manly Mayor, Council, and many churches, organizations and businesses in the Manly region. A stand promoting ‘Action Against Poverty’ will also be located at the German Showcase.

There is a range of opportunities for local organizations and businesses to participate and to support the Small Business Showcase. This could be by either supplying products or services for free, by providing raffle prizes, or by making a business donation to ‘Action Against Poverty’. Business donations are fully tax deductible.

Current Funding: The position is approximately 50% funded (assuming MTS stipend $16-19K per year) and could be part time to begin with. We would like to invite you to the Marriage Course Supper Party on Monday, 3 April 2006 at St Matthews on the Corso @ Manly (1 Darley Road) at 7.00pm.

The Marriage Course is a fun relationship building exploration, eight ‘special date’ nights out a couple will enjoy together. A treasure chest of new ideas for any marriage of any age, at any stage.

The Supper Party is designed to give you a glimpse of the Marriage Course content.

While inspiring and entertaining it allows guests to find out whether they might further investigate such a seminar.

The Party is an opportunity to mix with couples who have just completed the Marriage Course – hear first hand why the course program is so attractive and being met with much enthusiasm by a fast growing number of people from all walks of life.

We will also screen a short video where several couples share their own experiences.

Did you know that a bunch of St Matty's guys will be meeting fortnightly at Bacino (cnr Darley & Whistler Streets) for brekkie and discussion of a book called 'Beyond Greed'?

It will happen every 2nd Friday 7.00 - 7.45am from 31st March.... probably discuss a chapter each time.

Beyond Greed is a confronting book .... how keen are you to grow as a Christian man?

'Greed' is not the most fashionable concept these days. It ranks with 'guilt' and 'sin' as words that many people have stopped using. According to Brian Rosner, greed is also a massive blind spot for Christians, which is surprising given how much the Bible has to say about it.

He writes: "The most disturbing thing about the fact that greed is idolatry is that hardly anyone owns up to being a worshipper. Imagine the response of unbelief in the local church if it were revealed that the vast majority of its members were secretly worshipping other gods. Yet if our analysis of the religion of money is right, the unthinkable may not be so far from the truth"

Jim Wallis in Sydney - Adviser to Bush & Blair - Come and hear!

Jim Wallis, well known author, speaker on ethical issues, advisor to President Bush and Tony Blair and a prophetic Christian voice for our time, will be in Sydney on Tuesday April 11.

He will be speaking at Sydney University Great Hall at 6.30 at an event organised by World Vision.

He will be launching and signing copies of the Australian edition of his latest book, God’s Politics: how the right gets it wrong and the left doesn’t get it.

Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision, who has written the foreword to the book will host the evening and with Jim Wallis will respond to questions.

Jim Wallis is a supporter of Micah Challenge and spoke at the inaugural Micah Challenge meeting in Mexico in 2003.

If you can make it on April 11, I’m sure you will be challenged, enthused and entertained. Please bring friends – you can always go out for a cheap meal in Newtown afterwards to discuss all you’ve heard!
